I am interested in seeing other people do this drill or others like it that help in one pocket.
Lenny,

Nice shooting in that vid. Back in the mid to late 80's I used to practice the "L" routine. It's a great practice for one-pocket. I always shot it where if the cueball hit another object ball, I would start over.

It got too easy after a while and I needed to find something tougher. I started shooting it in "reverse" order. That is, I would start with the ball on the side rail and work my way to the ball on the end rail. I always shot either layout in order: endrail to siderail or siderail to endrail.

After a while, that got too easy and I searched for something harder. I started trying to shoot the ball on the end rail and then the ball on the side rail, as I show in my WEI table(shoot in rotation). I tried to pick a ball from the end, the side, and then back to the end rail. I never did run out this way but it was a heck of a challenge nonetheless.

For practicing one-pocket this is the best routine I've seen except for the one that I saw Pittsburgh John showing at the Rack one night.

you put 3 balls in strategic spots around the table and try to run all balls into one pocket. it can be made more difficult by which diamond the balls along the long rail are placed. the 3 balls along the long rail are somewhat diagonally positioned. thats all i remember. i think you said you got to 12
i dont remember if you said you got to 15.
hope what i described above gives you an idea of what im talking about:eek: :D

Here you go Larry. You start with ball-in-hand behind the line and fire away at pocket 'A'. As long as you pocket a ball you keep shooting, even if you disturb other balls. You have a good memory, I did run 12 one time. I have seen 15 run once also. If you can average 7 in this routine then you are doing well, in my opinion. This is the way Pittsburgh John set it up.

I always shot it the way it is in this layout. The balls on the headstring are moved up to the diamond nearer the side pocket.

I learned this drill from Peter Rabbit in the 60s. Peter would shoot them in rotation, as you did, and not touch another ball, as you did, and he would bet even money that he could do it every time.
The only criticism I have of your run is that you wound up far away from your work a few times and you went to more than one rail often. When running the first line you should only come off of the short rail, and not have to go to the long rail; and when you get to the second line you should try to only use the long rail.
That means you have to get the correct angle every time, and you will be operating much closer to your work. That is balkline type position, and not many players are comfortable with it.

A hint for those trying to run off the first line using only one rail: To maintain the correct angle you must play the cue ball to land in the line of the THIRD ball rather than the next ball in the sequence. Example: If you had them lined up in rotation you would shoot the one ball to get straight in on the three ball, which would give you the correct angle on the two ball, then shoot the two to get straight in on the four to get you right on the three and so on.

Beard

It's a fabulous one pocket drill
