Here's a layout from a book. You have pocket 'B'. What would you do from here?

This is one option.....

it is agressive but it could come out really strong if hit well.

Nudge up between the 9 and the five, hopefully kissing both at the end. The difference between 3/0 and 3 /-1 is negligable here. Hell, I could live with 4/-3 the worst of it if it were my inning and I had a fair shot.

i would leave him up on the short rail near the upper right corner blocking his shot at the 2 ball. from there he cant do much damage and cant knock away or play you too safe

Here's the suggested shot from the book. I think it's a good shot. It's good if the 14 goes in and it's good if it doesn't.

Thats a good shot Dennis. What book is that from? Is that what you would shoot?

Now your opponent is shooting what? The 11, force follow the cue ball back to the same spot between the 9 & 5.

Interesting game.

I see 2 shots. One would put the cue ball right where the 11 is and just put the 11 on the end rail, he cant see any ball from there that he can make directly, only combos which I might like him to shoot as I have some strength on my side in the danger zone, this is a shot anyone can make. The second shot depending on your level of play would be coming off the left side of the 11 and slide over getting the cue ball in line with the 13, 1, 2 but close to the pocket so I protect the balls in the danger zone and the 10 and 12 provide cover.

Jim,

It's from W.O.P.. If you make the 14 he will be shooting from here. Shooting the 11 and rolling forward looks like the return shot so far, as shown on page 2.

I saw that shot but also but thought about - if there is a real good natural angle you could get coming off the 14 - going 2 rails off the 14 onto the 13 to use it as a blocker towards his hole and to protect the balls near mine. Not saying I'd shoot it based on the posted WEI...or even the 3D version.

Thats my point Dennis. What have you accomplished by making the 14. Now there is another ball in play for your opponent and your still hooked.

Always with the negative vibes Moriarity;) . I'll tell you what you've accomplished by making the 14. You extended the game one more shot. You left no offensive shot. You left no dead-cinch for him to play safe. The 14 is also in play for you, not just for your opponent.

This safety ain't no hanger. Several things can go wrong with it. The 11 could carom off the 10 and leave you a free straight-back on it, with a possible shot at the 5-9 combo next. The cueball could hit the side-pocket tit. He could fail to get you behind the balls. This shot ain't no lock. If he does everything perfect you can still push out and take a foul uptable. You can only hit 4 balls from the opening position and you aren't going to shoot the 5 or 9. That leaves the 11 or 14. Pick one:)

That bridge would be crossed as necessary. If the balls lie correctly, escape is still fairly easy .... not too many folks are capable, either in their hearts or their mechanics, of playing a long combination from up by the 11 (and not by making the 14). If one is perfectly between, so as to preclude one having a shot at the 4 AND/OR the 6 , or a rail first cross table kick into the bottom of the 6 , then perhaps one has to rethink the matchup.

I would as soon slit my wrist as leave a one-rail kick on the two ball from the corner unless the table had 4 1/4 inch , or less, corner pockets.

And yes, I do know how to lose with grace.

That's what I get for stealing someones WEI table and clearing it to use as mine. Next time I'll get the big one so I can see what I'm doing:mad: .

Obviously I put the 10 just slightly in the wrong place. Oh well, ain't the first time, probably not the last:) .

It still looks unmakeable to me until I put a line on it. Good eye PJ.

I like this shot better. If you play off the 11 he can just pocket the 14 and your still in trouble.

I couldn't tell either until I drew the line. Maybe the layout in the book is slightly different?

How 'bout this for foolish optimism?

PJ, this is almost the shot I spoke about earlier, to me this would be the best shot as you have strength on your side and cover on those balls by your pocket. Your opponent has to do something here. :)

I just checked the book again. I copied the layout correctly. If you place a straightedge from ball to ball in the book, the 2 ball can also be made with room to spare but it looks close until the straightedge is applied.

In the book it shows an 'X' where the cueball stops. It doesn't show an actual ball. I'm thinking that the idea was to wedge the cueball between the 14 and the corner pocket facing and leave him hooked. The book doesn't show the 14 being made, only hit. There is no written description of the layout either so nothing is said about the cueball ending up frozen between the 14 and the corner.

Here is the exact layout from the book without the 14 being pocketed. Very chancy to me. The book doesn't state if the 14 starts off frozen either but it looks like it might be.

Dennis
