Beginner question.

Does hitting the point of the cushion count as a bank if the ball goes in the pocket right next to the point? If that counts, then what about the small portion of the cushion beyond the point?

That is not considered a bank shot.

the cushion just past the point is effectively rounded, you should read the Beards, "Banking with the Beard", to find some clever ways to use that portion of the rail to make shots you otherwise wouldn't even look at...
