Looks like the obvious shot, if the correct 13 carom angle is there...is to shoot at the middle of the 5/13 - 13 goes into the cluster above Billy's pocket opening them near the pocket, 5 goes 2 rails towards the pocket, and you slide the cueball over to hide behind the stack.

Cuz it looks to me like the 5ball is slightly blocking the 13 from going in the pocket...also, since you said this situation is from Billly's instructional video - I didn't think Billy would be displaying a shot situation where all you're supposed to know to do is shoot a ball straight in......

billy is demonstrating a layout and the reasons for the the shot selected
his pocket is the lower right corner
its billys shot

the point of the thread was
i was bored
wanted to post something "fresh"
thought i give a plug to some longtime members to help christmas sales:D
and for the newbies show something they could learn

of course our astute, learned one pocket master ghost got it right:D

the idea was instead of shooting the 13 which billy said was a 50% chance of making it he was demonstrating the concept of buiding/ developing a stronger position
as ghost said shoot the 13 into the cluster to open them up
and the cue ball carom off the 5 and goes into the side rail and into the stack
final position

When looking at this layout I would have a hard time not shooting the 5 straight in the hole. If you cut it well with good speed it is very safe leaving the cue ball near the line of balls towards the bottom of the stack. It is a little bit of a gamble but if it came out well you could run a bunch.

If the 9 ball on the bottom of the stack didn't go billy's shot is without a doubt the best option.

dudley i agree for demonstration purposes the position of that line of balls
9/6/ 1 could have been positioned differently to not make your shot so enticing:D
he was trying to show the value of building position rather than just make a ball
remember billy is trying to demonstrate concepts not challenge experienced players with what would you do:)

Understood,

His shot situation was very well thought out and a very powerful shot that isn't seen very often.

I like the concept of playing shape off the carom to the side of the stack. Sending 2 balls towards your hole while ducking and breaking up some trouble is always a strong move in one pocket. :)

I would not have seen the shot that Billy played -- kissing the cue ball off both balls and then off the rail into the stack. I would have seen Ghost's shot :)

Steve, the angle offered to play the combo bank and go to the side rail wasn't available, in fear of kissing the 5 ball, so I played off the 5 ball and pushed it toward the top of the stack. The cue ball would then take a natural course to the side rail and then into the stack. If the angle on the combination afforded me to hit the meat of the head ball then the 5 ball would of left quickly opening up a safe route for the cue ball to go to the side rail and then into the stack, but The way The Ghost saw the shot was understandable because it was a good shot, but didn't carry the angle to shoot it. At times you have to be at the table to feel the subtle difference needed for certain shots.

Billy I.
