What happens when you or you oppenent doesn't hit his ball at all? Just misses the ball altogether and hits nothing but rail

And doing it intentionally is a common defensive move in One Pocket -- you lose one ball, but it is typically used to either get out of a nasty trap or to put your opponent in a nasty trap, when you have no natural path off a ball to accomplish that.

you dont get ball in hand in one pocket unles the cue ball scratches in a pocket
or goes off the table
and then it would be ball in hand in the kitchen (behind the head string)
so just like taking an intentional scratch you play the cue ball where it lands
