Every few years these guys like Corey find someone who might lose $10 or $20 thousand. There might be 1 or 2 guys who are gambling big like that with good players across the country. In my short-lived pool playing career and newfound jock-sniffer status, someone like Dippy who will lose over $100 thousand comes along once every 10-20 years. And guys like Corey are foolish for firing at it? Unbelievable. Call them foolish for what they do with the money once they win, not for taking a shot at it.
As you point out Senor, a whale/sucker is a rare thing indeed. Even rarer, is the pool player, that doesn't have a way to blow his cash ASAP...(Horses, cards, women, booze, drugs, etc., pick one or all) If they make a decent score, few seem to be smart enough to buy a decent car, or put a down payment on a house...In the past, pool players (myself included)...used the toothpick/lumber yard mentality and, sometimes it actually worked...It can be a very addictive life syle...Easy come, easy go..
I have no idea where Dippy stands now, but I imagine he is still pretty well stuck. His main forte has been to make them bet nose-bleed high. Some dogged it, some didn't.
He is no dummy, and he appears to have improved his overall game considerably.
Have you noticed, there also seems to be more well heeled backers/stakehorse's ready to fire at Dippy's B/R...Or maybe its just the inflation factor. It seems
10K, 20K, (and up) action is a lot more prevailent, than 2 to 3K action, ever was in my day. (except for Jack Cooney
)
With some very minor tweaks, or gaffs, I think they will continue to put good player's (and good $$$) in the box with him. He is so erratic and unpredictable, they all hope to really get his nose open, and catch him on an off day...But, his 'off days', are improving rapidly..JMHO
