Here's a tale from the old Greenway room in Baton Rouge. Not exactly an injury, but anyway - A regular called Mr. Ed was playing a game of eight ball, and as he fired a shot he passed out and fell to the floor. In a few minutes he woke up just long enough to ask "Did I make the shot?" and then Mr. Ed closed his eyes forever.

No, I was not present to see him go.

I saw a guy after racking for 9 ball bent over the table, putting the rack in the slot, get the cb right in the teeth when the other guy broke (double entendre intended). Not pretty.

His wife Bernice? was at Olathe/Shooters/KS and fell off her chair from a raised area while watching a match. There was no lip to stop the chair legs from moving as she slowed reached the cliff, fell backwards and ended up getting injured. When she came back with neck brace and other infractions to her body Red was asked about her injuries, he said something like ''it was a $100k-$150K injury.

Back in the sixties I was playing a drug dealer in San Jose. I was giving this guy the seven playing nine ball. That was our customary game. One time I was getting off racking the balls when he broke and the cue ball came flying toward me and hit square on the jaw.

I was dizzy for the next hour or so but still kept playing. That cue ball hit me so dead center on my jaw that I believe that's what kept my jaw from being broken. Off to one side or the other it for sure would have broke. After that I always made it a habit to lay my stick on the table until I finished racking.

Here's a story about the time I was playing Flyboy some bar table nine ball for a hundred a game. He was being staked by Charlie The Ape. Charlie got a game on the table next to us for $5 a game with some young kid just to have something to do. The kid was in his early twenties. Charlie was looking at our game more that his. At one point the kid was up a few games and says 'I'm going to bust this guy". Charlie looked at him for a few seconds and then pulled out a huge wad of money and says to the kid "you're going to bust me five dollars a game?" then slaps him in the face so hard that the kid reels back into the juke box and hits the floor. At this point the kid now has tears running down his face.

Charlie walks up to the kid and with one hand on the back of his shirt and the other hand on the kids pants, picks him up and throws him on the table and says "shoot, it's your shot.

For those that knew Charlie you knew not to mess with him.

Sorry Barber. I just stole this story for my book. You get a byline of course. You shoulda registered it with the Writers Guild in LA before you posted it.
