Hooray!

Hooray!

I think we need to applaud the people and pool room for trying to put this together.

Sure it would be great for participants to have expenses paid and other perks, but this is a pool room trying to bring us eight of the best players in the world and streaming it free for all one pocket lovers to sweat.

If it does come off, Let's thank them for there efforts, show the players and everyone involved how much we appreciate what they are doing for themselves and the game and hope it is the start of something we will all benefit from.

Absolutely, and there's no better way for viewers to applaud than by putting up some of their cash for the privilege.

I don't have the resources to manage contributions to a player expense fund, but I hope someone who does, will.

I'm sorry but i don't get this. these are hard core gamblers who live on the road all the time, if they enter its because they feel they can make money here by playing. why people think their expenses should be paid for is beyond me. its not like they're doing peace corp work!!!!
now if we are talking about Fast Lenny, thats a different story. that guy does so much maybe he should go to the Derby as our representative. keith

I will give it two weeks, if sponsorship for the rooms is not there I will set something up so people can contribute to this fund. Those who can will be able to contribute and those who cannot can still enjoy the show too. I do want the players to feel they are being appreciated and not taken advantage of. Will keep everyone informed on it all. Thanks for the support and positive responses.

True, but I'd like to see the best players do better financially than the best players generally do. Our sport does not IMO offer the reward that reflects the level of skill at the top and, given the great pleasure I've derived from watching them (and you, you side-winder) I'm willing to kick in.

(When I tried to play you some 9-ball, that contribution was entirely unintentional :p but I enjoyed the show.) ;)

In spite of the wonderful opportunity we have (as spectators) to watch what figures to be the eight best players in the country competing against one another there's a feeling of disrespect I get for the players, in terms of selling themselves as cheap as they are in agreeing to travel and compete against one another for their own money. Adding only $2,000 for this (imo) challenge match is taking advantage of the players. I believe that their hotel and traveling expenses should be offered as an incentive to all the players that are competing.

This type of a promotion will not last if the players have to pay for their expenses, it's simply not economically feasible for the players to benefit from this type of an arrangement..let alone their backers (whomever they are)

I like the concept but there needs to be something extra in it for the players for it to be sustainable, i'm sure there must be room for that somewhere.

This is only good for the promoter and for the spectators. Lets not get this twisted..the players are the most important piece of the venture..treat them like they are..or at least pretend you are.

$300 TRAVELING EXPENSES FOR EA. PLAYER X 8= $2400
$60 EA. NIGHT TWO NIGHTS $120 X 8= $960

For approx $3500 dollars more this type of a show could be sustainable.

If this tournament is set up in Louisiana, I will pay each of the eight player's travel expenses and hotel rooms.

If I may.

$3500 is a lot of money, and things can't be had both ways.

In one sense people can't say it's an insult to players to add that little, and then in another thread talk about $30k sets, $10k sets, or weeks of non stop gambling.

How about a more positive outlook as in, "thanks for adding anything at all, we appreciate it"

One pocket tournament in Louisiana: a challenge to onepocket.org

One pocket tournament in Louisiana: a challenge to onepocket.org

Not only will I pay for the travel expenses (up to $300 per player) and hotel rooms of the eight players, but I will match all added money from onepocket.org members up to $5,000 for the prize fund.

That means we could put up $10,000 if you, the members, put a little "skin in the game" to grow our great sport with me. Some can contribute very little, others, like me, can contribute far more. We cannot wait for others to support our game. The caveat that it be in Louisiana would allow me to use it as advertising for my law firm and it would also allow me to attend in person as my schedule prevents me from travelling much of the year.

The details of the tournament can be worked out by others, but I am willing to put my money where my mouth is. We need another big one pocket tournament on the calendar and I am willing to be a sponsor if it is played in my home state. I do not mean to dissuade others from putting on a west coast event, which I believe is needed, but I can help start one down here.

Great gesture by you Joe and hope something comes together. Unfortunately this event did not come together. I believe taking care of the players rooms/airfare/food & drink would have been a better way to go then the $2000 added and would help the backers to save some money and be worthwhile. I do hope to be able to stream an event like this in the future so keep me in mind.

Joe, your offer of $3,500 and willingness to match up to $5,000 is greatly appreciated. I would be glad to do the commentary for this event for free, all I ask is my expenses be paid (room and board) Maybe we could get Doc or some one who is familiar with some room owners in La. to contribute to the added money, along with what ever money could be raised from our site (OnePocket.org) Possibly we could have a tournament that would be an annual stop which would be great for the game.

Buffalo Billiards in New Orleans may be a place that may be interested in adding money and hosting the event, that would be a very enviable venue for many reasons.

Lets not allow this opportunity to slip by us, please some one get involved and promote this in the La. area.

This is a wonderful offer from Joe Long! Buffalo Billiards is a great action room, but it's a little crowded. To my knowledge Buff has never had a 1P tournament at his establishment. Joey Aguzin would probably be the best guy to approach Buff with the idea.

On the other hand Lacy's Cue is a large, beautiful room, excellent equipment, very spacious, and has food. If we could get an idea of how much outside money could be raised, and how much the house would need to be willing to add, then I'd be happy to approach Frankie Haines with the concept. I know that he has put (and is putting) a lot of money into his establishment in order to make it the best, so it's possible that he might be interested in hosting a prestigious one-pocket event.

Those of us who care most about making this happen need to be sure we don't let this opportunity slip by.

I wonder what is the general feeling here about whether to shoot for a big-money entry/small-field event, or a Derby-like event? (A Derby-like event would change how Joe's generous offer might work -- if he's as interested in a Derby-like event as he is in a big-money pro event.)

If the former, how about -- rather than having the room owner add money to the prize find -- have him put up money for "show-up" fees so that the added money benefits every pro who is able to raise the entry fee. ($500 each is only $4000 for an 8-man field, and $300 each is less than $5000 for 16-man.

Travel expenses and show-up fees would reduce player/backer costs enough that it might draw more players than we imagine.

One pocket tournament

In the past, we had a casino host the event. Many of you remember Grady Mathews' Legends of One Pocket, held in 1999 in Baton Rouge. If we can get a casino involved, it would be a larger event obviously because the casino would want maximum participation. I see it this way:

1. Casino sponsorship with a large field and lesser entry fees.

2. Pool room sponsorship with an 8/16 man max and larger entry fees.

The casino sponsorship would give more prize money and probably be optimum. I have spoken to the BR room owner, Mike Black, and he has agreed to be a $1,500 sponsor if the BR casino hosts the event. We could get a shuttle to shuttle people from the pool room to the casino every two hours, like we did before. The casino in mind has hotel rooms at their casino, restaurants and all casinos are open 24 hours in this state. The pool room, however, closes at 2 am. If the casino does not agree to get involved, a room owner would have to sponsor the event, and we would be looking at a smaller field. If the casino is not interested, I will talk with the New Orleans room owners and feel them out. New Orleans pool rooms can stay open 24 hours and I am on good terms with Frank Haines, Buffalo and Jamie Farrell, the room owners in the New Orleans area and can get their input.

Those sound like two great options, Joe. It would be lovely if the casino would agree to host; and it would guarantee a large field. BR has plenty of 1P history. Of course at the casino, equipment would have to be trucked in. At Grady's Gulf Coast Classic in Gulfport, the casino gave him the venue hall for free, but I don't believe they added any money.

Otherwise a smaller, higher entry event could be hosted at any of the N.O. rooms. I'd sure love to see Frank get involved, since his would be such a beautiful venue. And Lacy's could handle even a larger event.

Please keep us updated.

This is cart-before the-horse, but I prefer double elimination to the buy-back format if it becomes an event we might all play. Even though I'd definitely be dead money, I'd pay up to $300 entry for Double-elim. That level fee would cut down the field to make it more manageable but wouldn't hurt the prize fund much compared to, say, $125-150 entry.

Stray thought: Any chance BR city council (or whomever) would grant special dispensation for a room to stay open 24 hours for an event like this? (Not that there's anything wrong with NO.)

Another stray: I think only 10 tables would be needed to handle a 128-player field, race to 3, double-elim, over 3 days.

Depends on who you're trying attract.

At the $200 range, I can think of 5 people from here who would go, or we'd all drive together. Any more than that, and 3 or 4 of us just can't justify it as we are dead money.
