A question for the knowledgable.

I've heard talk about James "Texas Blood" Brown and i've also heard mention of a guy by the name of Javenly "Youngblood" Washington but what i've heard has been very cloudy at best. Were these two different guys and who was the better player?

Pics and war stories would be appreciated.

Two different people for sure.. Washington is in the Bank Hall Of Fame.. He was A Chicago SouthSide... Beard worked pretty hard on that one. He was Beards hero and was very good.. They would line up a big match with Chapman and have to go get Washington out of the Manteno Mental Inst. over the wall and transport him to the poolroom which would be packed wall to wall for the match, like a World Series atmosphere and excitement.. Sweaters would come from everywhere, He would play with his hospital ID bracelet on, and then, after his match with Cannonball, they would drive him back to the center, hoist him over the wall, and he would resume his dreary existence as a mental patient.

You can read about James "Youngblood" Brown AKA 'Texas Blood' in the AZ thread, there.. He was good, also.. Beard related a pretty humorous anecdote about him in The Encyclopedia.. Beard was in a black room in Detroit talking to Brown and Brown was explaining to Beard how well regarded he was around there and not to worry about anything and all of a sudden a gentleman, Cadillac Willy, shows up, demanding money from James and as James begins to alibi etc, Willy pulls out a gun and starts shooting.. Beard dives under a pool table, James grabs a large fellow that was just standing there, and uses him as a human shield for a little while and the shield guy also had a gun that comes out but gets dropped on the floor right next to Beard and then James and Beard throw their bankroll up in the air, totaling about $640, and the crowd scrambles for the money ect, and they both get out ok.. .. Beard's book is the best...

I know "Blood" well as he has been in the LA area since the 60's. He loves the ponies and plays poker sometimes. Doesn't play pool anymore but insists he can if called upon to get in action. I am going on 70 years old and he's right behind me. He looks great and if anyone needs to contact him notify me and I'll give him your phone number.

This thread couldn't have been more timely. Yesterday I ran into James at the card casino and he told me about his bout with cancer. He is currently battling kidney and lung cancer but feels the doctors have gotten to him in time as he is making positive progress. I hope for the best. What a character he is and hopefully will continue to be.

Mr. 3C, I will tell James you said hello. He's liable to pop up anywhere. I love him dearly but the bite is still a large part of his program. it's automatic, I just give him $20 every time I see him whether he asks for it or not. LOL

I hate to hijack my own thread but i'd venture to say that Cliff could give any breathing human at least 9-7 on the bite. Ronnie Allen was pretty damn strong too.

While attending college in LA and making a living playing pool - I went on the road every summer from San Diego to Berkley and when blood was about 18 we went together and neither of us lost to anyone and came back with a pile of $. Blood beat Flip Gene (a top Gin Player) in Frisco out of about $8k on a 5X10 playing 9 ball and almost never missed. Nobody could believe how good he played. He and I ran around with Cecil mostly at Celebrity Billiards in Hlwd for a while and Cecil and I hung out for a couple years while he was right handed. I would love to see blood after all these years so if anyone can hook us up, would really appreciate it. By the way blood was a straight shooter but no bank or 1 pkt player then. I would only play blood 1 pkt and Cecil 9 ball so I would have a chance. I was in shock the first time I saw Cecil playing left handed. Reconnected with him at HTimes after not playing for 20 years. Cecil was most proud of beating Efren in a 1 pkt tourn. Efren and I also became friends and I have a lot of fun stories from him.

I used to love Celebrity Billiards on Vine St. in Hollywood. During the late '60s I went there many times to play, and saw some good players, Cecil among them. Maybe I'd recognize you.

Welcome to onepocket.org, and very nice first post sir. You also apparently are part of a siginificant subset we have here -- lawyers that play One Pocket. We have enough for a small -- and it would be very competitive -- tournament!!!

Youngblood(James) used to come to The Golden Cue in Rosemead, right outside Los Angeles, with LA Moe, another local character and good guy. We would mix it up and it was hard for me to beat him and usually went back and forth. One time he had just gotten back from Canada where he had been playing pool and the horses. I got him pretty good playing three red ball snooker on a tight 5 x 10. I got bit of course, and every other time I saw him at a poolroom or the track. He loved the horses and his handicapping theory was basically that it was a big conspiracy and they were all in it and you just had to figure out whose turn it was. After playing the horses for over 60 years, he may be right. Lol, it could not be my poor handicapping.

The police in Arlington Tx. stopped Tall Jimmy and myself, Youngblood was in the back seat. They wanted to know why we had a little Jiver in the rear?
We convince them that he was our Caddie, they let us go. :) Blood was maybe 16 years old.

The key to beating the horses which I did for years was either not go to the track and not bet on every race. And bet big on great horses that come to CA to run against Ca horses. Ca fans let the best in the world Dr Fager go off against local nags at 5/2 two years in a row - he galloped to easy wins and I bet tons. You can only find one or two or none good bets at any track a day so bet at many tracks and make sure you have a top jock. I made a ton on Pincay his first year in Chgo. but did not bet on him the year he got married which was his worst year. I have watched many lose their ass betting on every race and chasing longer odds as their losses mount. There are so many variables that u have to spend way too much time to analyze each race and each horse but certain patterns will make you $
The last time I heard about a match between blood and RA the room owner wanted to kill both of them because he believed he got dumped for big $ the 2d day.

July 2022 After hearing Texas blood had cancer and was dying - I tried hard to find him and finally did because he comes to Gardena Bowl in Gardena CA coffee shop once in a while for breakfast. The manager called me one morning and told me he was there so I ran over and spent the next few days with him mostly at Gardena bowl reminiscing about our road trip more than 50 years ago when we ran up the CA coast beating everyone who played us and finally ended up with Blood robbing Flip Gene in Frisco playing 9 ball on a 5*10. Nobody could believe that skinny little 18 yr old kid could play that well on that table. we spent the next 18 months or so hanging with Cecil Tugwell at Celebrity Billiards in Hollywood when Cecil was playing right handed. Blood is most proud of winning the world bank pool over Donnie Anderson and Bugs long ago. He claims to have given up pool long ago. He claims the drs were surprised that he recovered after some chemo and he seems healthy at 72. I am still in touch with him and if anybody wants to see or talk to him - email me at cmll2000@yahoo.com.
