Well, thanks to a few of you for your tips; and to the rest of you for your chatter. Now, does anyone else have any advice for aiming straight-backs?

Sorry for the sidetrack Doc. Yes I have a proven system for straight-back banks.... it's called hit n' hope.

Thats the extent of my input. Wish I could offer more.

I think banking in 1P, is highly overrated. Given equal skill levels....the best banker, does not always have the best of it.

I think creativity and imagination, and a good concept of the game, are far more important. JMHO

Blackeee,

All Freddy needs, is a pictorial forward by a $5 Chicago hooker. (I'm sure he knows one)

It would definately boost sales. ;)

All this conversation demeaning the, playing, watching, applying, or learning about bank pool reminds me of a gay guy once telling me how unappealing sex with a woman was, and why would anyone want to do that? Also, "I only need "pocket speed" when banking in 1p," is another joke. Did anybody ever hear of playing position? I once played a pretty good speed of 1p myself. Since everybody I played could give me at least the seven ball, being able to hit bank shots at different speeds and playing postion kept me in the hunt. At a big tourn in St Charles ILL. Kim Davenport tried to make a game with me, he offered me the FIVE ball playing 9 Ball or he would take 8 to 7 playing banks or 9 to 8 playing 1pocket.

In an earlier post I put up a very unanswerable question, "Wouldnt you like to know what you are doing?" SJD answered "no" to that question outright. Consider this analogy. Think of a guy that spends all his time in a library, and somebody asks him if he would like to be able to read.

Freddy,

My mouth is crammed full of the words you've been trying to put in them. Do you really think I don't know that not all banks in 1P call for pocket speed.

I will assume (graciously) that you know, for maximum effect, a very large percentage of them do.

I see you are in your defensive mode again, and choose to try and talk to me like Ned in the first reader, while ignoring the gist of my statement in post # 12. (please re-read) All I said was, for me, trying to re-learn the concept of banking would be a complete waste of time at my age. I did say younger people can benefit from your teaching, but you chose to ignore that.

You are better at quoting things out of context, (when it suits your need) than "Slick Willie" Clinton

The challenge (in post #12) is open to you, and practically any bank specialist, any where near our diminished level of play. Theres no way to match up as if we were both in our prime, but you are sure in your woofing prime. I may be too, but I'LL still swing at 'em, if I like the game. ;)

Dick <--loves it when people get defensive. If they don't snap, they usually make a bad game. Also I never spent ANY time in a library...but I DID learn how to read....both people, and books.

I guess I'm a 'feel' banker and I bank pretty good.

I bought Freddy's book and enjoyed it - but I've just never been one to take a book to the pool room and start breaking stuff down. I like to play too much. I enjoyed it more for the stories...I've yet to truly analyze the information.

When I bank, I've always just aimed at the object ball. I kind of judge where the object ball is from the rail and then I judge the angle of the bank. From there I figure out what kind of position I need to play, thus figuring out the speed in which I will need to bank the ball. From there, I will pick a spot on the object ball to hit.

So...to sum it up. I pick a spot on the object ball to hit and it has worked pretty good.

vapros,

Freddy is correct about learning how to aim and shoot banks. If I was 18 yrs. old I would snatch up all of his books and DVD's, like Dick wrote. All of that great information wasn't around when I started playing. I learned by playing and watching better players.

There was one guy who would bring a different 'cousin' up to the room that I played at every week. All of his 'cousins' played banks very well and that was what we played. I think that except for John McCue I was the only player that gambled at banks in that room. You learn a lot from other players. Which shot to shoot when several are available, how to play safties and the hit to use on the banks that you do shoot.

Back then (late 70's early 80's), we played mostly with a 15 ball rack. A big difference from a nine ball rack. The table is much more cluttered.

All this talk about learning is making me want to order Freddy's books and DVD's. I think I will.

Dennis

At the risk of being chastised by you-know-who, for quoting my own post, I just wanted to say that I just ordered Freddy's DVD set and a book. Soon I'll be saying things like "I can outmove all them birds", or maybe "all you muggs ain't got a chance".

That's debatable. You won't pick up any points with Freddie and The Chicagoans with that statement. Did you know that??;)

....Before father time (theres a real a--hole, huh) cut my skills in half, I would have taken on a lot of good bankers, (IF they had to shoot all banks at pocket speed) and felt I could hang with them, multi-rail or straight.

That might make a good game...Set up a fairly tough bank, and get 2 points for making the shot, and 1 point for whoever gets closest to the pocket...race to so many points. Just a thought.

Dick

PS Good luck with your "Johnson" procedure. (Makeover ???....Do you get to pick your size ?)

Why didnt you proposition that game to me when we both were at Derby City? Do you think I would ever turn down a game where I was allowed to miss a bank and still get a point? I've had wet dreams about playing games like that. And since Incardona has stuck his big nose in, he can play some of that too.

the Beard

There is a missing ingredient in the Johnson procedure that might be critical to determine success. I brought it up in another thread -- a dumb, teenaged, hillbilly runaway.

Freddy,

I've no doubt we'll both miss a lot of banks, but who winds up closest to the pocket most times, may make you a severe underdog. :D

Dick <---would be up for 20 points, both shooting the same pre-determined shot, or shots. Semi-sociable...or hi-$$$.
(Backer's are beating down my door, and I've even had to take the phone off the hook.)

As careful as he is, I'm sure I could get Artie to stake it for the big balloons. How close are we going to be to the object ball? 8 and 9 footers, you can deal me out.
